2022 Southbound Summary
Our 2022 stats are interesting for many reasons. First, we increased our "normal" travel mileage by 359 and nearly doubled the normal cost to slightly over $500.
Even though that's way more than we normally pay to travel South, we feel it was way worth it. We spent 12 days On The Road so our actual cost for camping and fuel averaged $42 a day. In this day and age that's a smokin' deal.
Our vehicle trip odometer said we traveled 1,152.2 miles. Adding up the fuel stop odometers, the total came to 1,159 miles. That's pretty close so let's just use 1,159.
We consumed 90.82 gallons of fuel for a total cost of $376.08. The average cost for our fuel was $4.14 per gallon. We paid a low of $3.69 in Salina, Utah. Rural Utah fuel prices account for our high aveage per gallon cost.
Our shortest southbound travel route is 800 miles. The 359 extra miles cost $118.
Going out of the way to Capitol Reef National Park added $108 in camping fees. Consequently, we figure our longer-than-normal trip this year cost an extra $226.

Considering we spent a week in Capitol Reef Country, that seems like a real bargain.
AFter leaving Idaho Falls, we stopped to refuel in Montpelier, Idaho; Evanson, Wyoming and the Utah communities of Heber City, Salina, Bicknell, Torrey, Bicknell and Kanab. Our Arizona fuel stops were at The Gap on The Navajo Nation and at McGuireville near our Rimrock home.

One way to compare apples and oranges about the cost of our trip south is by looking at airfares. There's simply no way we could fly two people from Idaho Falls to Phoenix and then get a shuttle to Rimrock for $500. The cost would probably be around $750....or more. Transporting a travel trailer and 100's of pounds of personal stuff for a wonderful 12 day trip for $500 is a bargain by any standard.
